More Americans are starting to look at what’s in their skincare products as the trend of “clean beauty” gains momentum. Bakuchiol has emerged as a popular ingredient due to its ability to tighten wrinkles and fine lines. As a plant-based counterpart to retinol, bakuchiol leverages its botanical properties to encourage efficient skin cell renewal and amplify collagen production.
Unlike retinol, bakuchiol offers a more tolerable and gentle approach to skin rejuvenation, providing comparable benefits, while minimizing the risk of adverse reactions like redness, irritation, and dryness. I vividly recall the painful memories of my skin turning red and flaking as a teenager when I used retinol to treat my acne. For myself I can attest that bakuchiol is much gentler on the skin.
Bakuchiol is derived from the seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia plant, or babchi, which has a long history of usage in traditional Eastern medicinal practices. Studies have shown that bakuchiol can be an effective solution for reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
In fact, a study revealed that a 0.5% bakuchiol cream was just as effective as a 0.5% retinol cream in minimizing wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, with the added benefit of fewer side effects. Furthermore, bakuchiol may also be beneficial in treating acne, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin.
However, it’s crucial to note that additional research is necessary to fully comprehend the benefits and potential drawbacks of bakuchiol. As with any skincare ingredient, there is a risk of sensitivity, including redness, dryness, or stinging. To mitigate this risk, it’s recommended to start with a low frequency of application (2-3 times per week) and gradually increase as your skin becomes more tolerant.
When selecting a bakuchiol product, look for serums or creams that combine this ingredient with other active ingredients like squalene. Be aware that not all products derived from the Psoralea corylifolia plant are created equal; opt for products containing pure bakuchiol for optimal results. It’s also essential to choose a reputable brand that ensures the quality and purity of their ingredients.
At Beauty Abounded we use pure Bakuchiol in our Clear Complexion Cleanser, Foaming Face Wash, and Unveiled Beauty Face Moisturizer.
